About
The Lubavitcher Rebbe
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, of righteous memory (1902–1994)

The seventh leader in the Chabad-Lubavitch dynasty, the Rebbe is considered the most phenomenal Jewish personality of modern times. To hundreds of thousands of followers and millions of sympathizers around the world, he was — and still is — "the Rebbe," the one individual more than any other singularly responsible for stirring the conscience and spiritual awakening of world Jewry.
Born on the 11th of Nissan, 1902, in Nikolaev, Russia, to the renowned kabbalist and talmudic scholar Rabbi Levi Yitzchak and Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson, the Rebbe displayed prodigious mental acuity from early childhood. By his Bar Mitzvah, he was considered an illuy — a Torah prodigy.
A Life of Courage
At nine years old, young Menachem Mendel courageously dove into the Black Sea to save a child who had lost control of his boat. That sense of "other lives in danger" dominated his consciousness throughout his life — Jews drowning in assimilation, ignorance, or alienation, and no one hearing their cries for help.
Leadership & Vision
After the passing of his father-in-law in 1950, the Rebbe ascended to leadership of the Lubavitch movement at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn. Lubavitch institutions took on new dimensions as Chabad Houses opened in dozens of cities and campuses worldwide. He was a rare blend of prophetic visionary and pragmatic leader.
"Actualize Your Potential!"
With extraordinary insight, the Rebbe perceived the wealth of potential in each person. His message: "You are Divinely gifted with enormous strength and energy — actualize it!" He had an uncanny ability to meet everyone at their own level, advising Heads of State and speaking to small children with equal warmth and wisdom.
Everyone's Unique Role
The Rebbe would not acknowledge division or separation. Every Jew — indeed every human being — has a unique role in the greater scheme of things and is an integral part of the tapestry of G-d's creation. Every good deed brings humanity closer to the era of Moshiach.
"The Rebbe keenly understood that our every action is part of a bigger picture. Every good deed we do brings humanity closer to the ultimate goal — the era of cosmic perfection and universal awareness of G-d."
